Fleas & Ticks

What are they?

Fleas and ticks are totally different insects that often get lumped into the same category because they’re both found outside and they both feed on warm-blooded mammals.

Fleas are known for latching onto pets and then coming into your home and taking over. Once they’re in the house, they’ll lay eggs in the carpet and you’ll find yourself with all kinds of little red bites on your ankles.

Ticks are also known to gain entry to your home via pets but they don’t bit and leave. Instead, they burrow into the skin and feed there until discovered.

How Serious Is A Flea or Tick Problem?

Both fleas and ticks are known to carry and transmit diseases to humans. Fleas can spread typhus, the plague, and cat-scratch disease to name a few. Ticks, on the other hand, are mostly known for transmitting Lyme disease. All of these are serious problems, to say the least. Fleas are the ones that most quickly spread throughout your home by laying eggs all over the place. Their eggs are very small and therefore you can find yourself in a situation with a huge infestation in a short period of time. If you discover either of these pests in your home it’s best to have them professionally treated as quickly as you can.

How Did I Get Them?

Most commonly you’ll find these in the homes of pet owners. That’s because both fleas and ticks will latch onto your dog or cat when its in the yard and then unlatch inside of your house. From there they can spread like wildfire. However, they can also make their way into your home by simply walking in. It’s also possible that, if you just moved into a house, the previous owner had a flea or tick problem that they didn’t know about or report to you. So you may have accidentally moved into an infestation without knowing it.

Where Will I Find Them?

Outdoors you’ll generally find them in the grass and shrubs around your home. Ticks like to sit on the edge of a leaf or the top of a blade of grass so they can then latch onto passers-by. Fleas may be in your yard due to neighborhood cats, raccoons, or other rodents wandering through your yard. It’s uncommon for ticks to let go of a host once they find one. For that reason, an indoor infestation is uncommon and unlikely. Fleas, however, can thrive in indoor environments. You’ll find signs on your pets (both live fleas and eggs) by going over them with a fine-toothed comb. You can also look closely at the carpet and furniture where you may be able to spot either live fleas or eggs but they’re hard to see.
