Mosquitoes

What are they anyway?

Mosquitoes are everywhere in Texas, especially following the rainy season and if you have standing water near your home. Mosquitoes are tiny insects that almost resemble a slender fly and they like to feed on the blood of mammals and plant nectar. You’ll often find them near vegetable and flower gardens or swarming you when you’re trying to enjoy a backyard BBQ.

They feed with a tube like appendage protruding from their mouth and come in a variety of colors. The most common mosquitoes we see are either black and white, brown, or black. When they bite, you feel it and will most likely have a large red welt for the following week. Mosquitoes are known disease transmitters and should be exterminated anytime you have an issue.

Are Mosquitoes Dangerous?

Mosquitoes transmit many diseases including the West Nile virus, Encephalitis, and, more recently talked out, the Zika virus. Because mosquitoes move from host to host and feed on blood, there is a large potential for blood-borne pathogens to be transmitted. Most of the diseases they transmit are serious and many times they’re deadly so it’s highly recommended that you have a professional pest control company treat any mosquito infestations.

Why Do I Have Mosquitoes?

Mosquitoes flourish when there’s standing water and the weather is warm. This means you’ll have the biggest booms in the mosquito population during spring and summer months. When it’s dry out, there are often less mosquitoes because they need the standing water to lay their eggs. Mosquitoes also feed on plant nectar so yards and properties with lots of blooming flowers will often have more mosquitoes.

Where Will I Find Them?

Mosquitoes will most likely find you if you’re out in your yard. But if you’re looking for them, check standing water sources for their larvae. They’re most often during the morning and evening when the weather is cooler and during the hotter parts of the day, you can find them sheltered in trees, gardens, and anywhere that there’s shade.
